Are you interested in heli skiing with a small group in Northwest Greenland on the Arctic Circle? We fly into Mantisoq and heli from there 50 miles north to the island of Kangamuit where we base for the week. This is a 200 year old fishing village that is recently receiving tourists for the first time. There are 400 residents, all local Inuit Greenlanders with a rich history of fishing.
We stay in individual homes (two to four skiers per home) and eat as a group in one big home. The food is an abundance of fish varieties and the village supplies all meals. Whale blubber anyone?
The heli is parked down the steps from your home right on the edge of the harbor. We use A-Star B2 helicopters leased from Greenland Air with very experienced mountain pilots. This is a powerful heli for such low altitudes which ensures plenty of power to land anywhere and can take two groups of eight skiers for 25,000 vertical feet per day of skiing without refueling. The altitudes we ski are from 7000 feet to sea level. Average vertical for the week is 150,000 feet!! This trip is a very private trip with eight skiers and two guides (two groups). This is best for safety, efficiency of heli, and lots of skiing!
The skiing is like Valdez, Alaska on steroids! Runs average 4000-6000 foot verticals, most going right to the ocean's edge. This is a beautiful fiord area with amazing deep gorges slicing through the mountain range. We skied 90 first ski descents in 2004 and there are many still waiting. Most runs are on glaciers, down huge glacier valleys, and on numerous steep to mellow couloirs tucked into the mountains. The snow in May 2004 varied from perfect corn to boot top powder on north faces. Two weeks earlier would get more powder skiing, even though the corn was the best hero snow in the world last spring. We had three to four down days out of the 17 days we were there. Typical temperatures in May are 22F-40F. We can go fishing, boating, and skinning if the the heli can't fly up to the peaks.
We meet in Copenhagen at 9 am and fly to Greenland and are skiing by 2 pm the same day. Most Americans fly from NYC the night before, landing early morning before 9 am. Actually pretty quick considering the distance traveled.
